How to Debunk the Common Myths that Keep Us From True Success! (Myth #2)

myth 2

Myth #2 – Success is the result if what we “do.”

Early in my sales career I was driven by an “outside in” focus. My need for the external rewards of success (sales awards, bonuses, incentive trips) was so high that I was willing to set aside purpose and meaning in order to be rewarded and recognized. My “outside in” focus had me buying into a success-myth.

Success-myths are low-frequency beliefs that create dissonance to the flow of a Higher Power. A success-myth that affected me for many years, is found in the popular booklet titled, “The Common Denominator of Success,” which contains this famous quote: “the secret of success lies in the fact that successful people form the habit of doing things failures don’t like to do.”  (Albert E.N. Gray, Common Denominator of Success). The interesting thing about success-myths is that they often contain half-truths. They contain elements of truth, while leaving out the Universal Principles.

Rather than focusing on “what unsuccessful people aren’t willing to do,” what if we focused on: “If time and money weren’t an issue what would I become? Would I continue to do what I’m doing now?  If not, you are not experiencing resonance.

The quote leads you to assume that if you’ll just do the things that unsuccessful people aren’t willing to do, you will be successful. Focusing primarily on “doing” is and “outside out” focus.

Too many people are focused on doing, and they are miserable.  Misery is not True Success, it is dissonance! True success flows from the things that bring us joy.

Why doesn’t the “do” always lead to the desired “have?” It’s because the “do,” on its own, will not do much, unless it’s preceded by “be.”  An “inside-out” focus centers on “being” and Divine Purpose is about “being” who we were intended to “be.”

This myth is perpetuated by ego, which is the idea that “who I am is separate from God, my source.” When we believe we are separate, we start to believe “I am what I do, I am what I have, I am separate from everybody else, I am my reputation, I am what is missing in my life.” There are too many people doing what they “should” instead being who they are.

“You have a unique talent and a unique way of expressing it. There is something that you can do better than anyone else in the world – and for every unique talent and unique expression of that talent, there are also unique needs. When these needs are matched with the creative expression of your talent that is the spark that creates affluence. Expressing your talents to fulfill needs creates unlimited wealth and abundance.” (Deepak Chopra, The Seven Spiritual laws of Success, 95-96)

True success is not about what we “do,” it’s about who we “are,” and who we “are determines the frequency we send out to the Universe.

I’d love to hear your experiences with these principles!
